I should probably save this photo for Christmas time, but it’s been on my mind.
I took this when leaving Finland after my Christmas holidays. These lights decorate the windows of Kokkola-Pietarsaari airport at Christmas time, and they are very special. You only see these lights in the Pietarsaari region or in the windows of people with a connection to that area. They symbolise faith, hope and love - or charity, as it is referred to in official texts. While the lights only come out for a few weeks every year, the values they represent matter to us all year round. To me, they are so important that I have them tattooed on me.
Looking at this picture makes me sad and homesick at the same time as I feel oddly comforted. It was through these windows that I looked back just over nine years ago, watching my mother and father drive away from the airport after dropping me off. That is the last I ever saw of my mum.
I guess it’s a case of people seeing different things while looking at the same view.
