On New Year’s Day, dad and I visited our town’s old dumping ground which has been turned into a walking trail. The hill, consisting largely of decades-old rubbish, is just over 18 metres high, and probably still the highest point around. If I remember correctly, there are 53 steps to the top.
While I find it quite worrying that a town of 20,000 people has accumulated such a pile of garbage over the years, before we moved onto environmentally friendlier options, it’s a lovely spot for a walk, particularly because you can see so far. The town’s old water tower and a church spire can all be seen even in cloudy weather. On a clear summer’s day, the views are bound to be spectacular.
Silver linings, right?
