Sandwich cake.

Sandwich cake.

A Nordic delicacy here. In Finland we would call this voileipäkakku, in Swedish smörgåstårta. The literal English translation would be ‘sandwich cake’ although it’s not really used. It’s a staple of the smörgåsbord.

While I usually make up my own, there are recipes available if you are interested in making this. Try this one from ScandiKitchen (one of my favourite places to eat when in London).

On another note, did you know that the Finnish term for this recipe translates as ‘butter-bread-cake’ and the Swedish as ‘butter-goose-tart’? Yes, Finns call sandwiches buttered bread and Swedes buttered geese although the Swedish word’s origin is somewhat debatable. Aren’t languages fascinating?
