My favourite Christmas song. It always lets me down. Not the song because I obviously love it, but the fact that this is my favourite always announces to any Irish person I am talking to that I am not, in fact, Irish at all.
You see, as good as any Irish person I know, at least in my age group, will proudly state that ‘Fairytale of New York’ is their favourite Christmas song. That’s fine, and it’s an excellent song, but it’s not my favourite. It’s probably my second favourite, but nobody ever asks about that.
Because I’m a miserable old sod, I like the song that’s about heartache. Being heartbroken at Christmas is a thousand-fold worse than being blue at any other time of the year.
Anyway, I’ll always have a soft spot for a catchy pop chorus.
Merry Christmas!
